About Dr. GlynnDr. James Glynn is a sport psychologist who has worked with college and junior teams as well as individual athletes at the high school, college, and professional level. He received his Bachelors degree in psychology from Kean University and his Masters Degree in clinical psychology from Argosy University/Phoenix. He received his Doctoral degree from Argosy University/Phoenix in clinical psychology with a specialization in sport and exercise psychology. He is also licensed as a psychologist in New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arizona, Delaware, Louisiana, and Indiana,. He is registered as an out of state telehealth provider in Florida and has a license mobility passport allowing to practice in approximately 20 additional US states. Dr. Glynn is a former professional athlete and coach. He is a member of American Psychological Association division of sport and exercise psychology, a member of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, and
a mental health provider on the USOPC Mental Health Registry . Who can call themselves Sports Psychologists?Sport Psychologists must possess a doctoral degree (Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.) in the field of clinical or counseling psychology and be licensed as a psychologist in the state that they practice. In addition, they must have completed additional coursework in the field of sport psychology. Anyone who does not meet these criteria cannot call themselves a sport psychologist.What do Sports Psychologists do?Sports psychologists have two main areas of focus.
1. Performance Psychology – which focuses on how to get the best performance possible through the use of mental skills. Individuals without clinical/counseling training are able to provide to services.
2. Clinical/Counseling Psychology – which focuses on mental health related issues that athletes can experience as well as assessments and requires training in the use of clinical/counseling techniques as well as licensure.
Sports psychologists are typically the only individuals trained to work with both of these areas. Individuals can become certified consultants with training in sports science and kinesiology are able to work with athletes on performance issues.
What is SPort Psychology?
Sport psychology involves the study of how psychological factors affect performance and how participation in sport and exercise affect psychological and physical factors. Sport psychologists will aim to improve the psychological skills that are necessary for optimal athletic performance and are likely to work with athletes, coaches, and parents regarding injury rehabilitation, communication, team building, concentration, goal setting, guided imagery and career transitions.

Youth Sport Burnout
Dr. Glynn has developed a successful program to help educate players, coaches, and parents about youth sport burnout. The program runs for 8 weeks in 8 1-1½ hour classes. Modifications to the schedule can be made to accommodate fewer sessions. Please contact Dr. Glynn for further information or to schedule a workshop.
