About our pre-surgical bariatric psychological evaluations
Sakowitz Counseling is one of the leading providers of pre-surgical bariatric psychological evaluations in New Jersey. We have been conducting evaluations for the last 10 years and are one of the leading specialists for the weight loss community. We are currently the primary referral for over 25 bariatric surgeons in Northern and Central New Jersey and evaluate over 1,500 patients every year.We conduct evaluations in one of our four offices as well as online.
Our evaluation process is straight forward and lasts approximately 45 minutes. The process involves some psychometric screening measures to be completed during the evaluation, which focus on anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, drug and alcohol dependence, and the possible presence of eating disorders. During your meeting with the psychologist you will discuss your situation (severity and duration of your obesity, past weight loss attempts, and current medical concerns), expectations (weight loss goals, understanding of behavioral changes needed, and concerns), and post-surgical plans (exercise plans, and lifestyle adherence). It is important to understand that a history of mental health illness does not immediately preclude someone from bariatric surgery. Many individuals with a history of/or current anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, as well as many other mental health illnesses go on to have successful surgery. The main concern is whether the issue has been successfully treated or that it is currently being treated. We also offer accommodations for Spanish speaking patients. Please note that for all evaluations conducted online the appointment time is 15-20 minutes because all testing is completed in advance of the appointment.
Our reports are provided to the referring surgeon within 48 hours of the patient’s appointment (reports can be provided the same day if surgery needs require this). We also offer follow-up appointments after surgery to help you identify areas that need to be of focus to you.
Our Psychologists have a broad understanding of the different weight loss procedures and are experienced in identifying what is needed to have a successful outcome. They are friendly, knowledgeable, and active in the weight loss community. They have published articles in OH magazine, been team members in obesity research, run support groups, and conducted presentations.
